UP-LAB Lisboa delivering positive change to local community
Mouraria is the neighborhood where we live and where we decided to start our adventure.
Here the tradition meet the multiculturalism, an old medieval quarter, where Portuguese culture and people are mixed with Asian and African communities. This place is Portugal, India, Nepal, China, Angola, Mozambique and is Lisbon.
Since the past forty years it has been extremely neglected and poor part of the city but recently, last couple of years, something is changing. The city council and many local organizations put it's effort to improve in the living conditions of the inhabitants of Mouraria.
UP-LAB is taking part of this positive change. We believe being one the most potential communities in the whole city and we are full committed to transform that potential into real actions.
We are transforming industrial and local waste into products to answer to the practical needs of the community. Our goal is to close the cycle of waste collection, transformation and product selling into a micro enterprise leaded from the local people for the local needs.
Here are the projects we are working on:
UP-Roofing because thermal insulation means zero waste.
Winter in Mouraria is cold.
Not for the wind. Not for the hills but for the houses. Old houses without any heating system and more than that without any thermal insulation. Inside or outside, apart for the wind, it doesn't make so much difference. Is cold. Everyone here uses high consuming electrical heaters, heat that is dispersed incredibly quick. In one word, a Waste.
Portuguese people love coffee. It's a ritual: coffee shop, friends, good time. Many times per day. Coffee is packed into resistant bags made out of a multilayer of plastic and aluminum. Designed to protect coffee freshness. Insulate it from humidity, temperature and light. In one word, an Opportunity.
We are prototyping a panel for roofs and walls insulation, made out of UP-cycled coffee bags ready to warm up Mouraria houses. For real.
UP-Jam the paradise for imperfect fruit
Yummy jam made out of the not sold fruit by the supply market of the city and produced in a communal kitchen of the quarter by the neighbors.
